The story begins in the provincial capital in the early spring of 1985. Lin Xiaowei was unreasonably fired at the factory for refusing to be harassed by the director's son. To make matters worse, she discovered that her boyfriend Zhao Feng was having an affair with a female colleague from a better off family. Double heartbroken, she packed her simple luggage and set off on her way back to her hometown of Daoxiang Village with her meager savings. Outside the window is a city scene that is rapidly regressing, and inside the car is her confused and unknown future.
