The story begins in the provincial capital in the early spring of 1985. Lin Xiaowei is unfairly fired from her factory job after refusing the harassment of the department head’s son. To make matters worse, she discovers that her boyfriend, Zhao Feng, has an ambiguous relationship with a better-off female colleague. Heartbroken twice over, she packs her few belongings, takes her meager savings, and sets out for her hometown, Daoxiang Village. The cityscape rushes past outside the window, while her future inside the train remains uncertain.
