Synopsis

Su Yanci, courtesy name Jingyuan, is the son of Su Zhenting, former commander of the Northern Frontier. After his family is disgraced as traitors, he lies low in the martial world as “Master Mo,” then enters the imperial court, rising from Assistant Director of the Supreme Court to Censor-in-Chief. His plans are meticulous, yet he always leaves room to maneuver. While investigating the Jiangnan salt-tax case, he spares a minor official from the maternal relatives’ faction who was forced into wrongdoing, keeping him in reserve for later. He often struggles with the murky accusations against his family. When it comes to Su Ningshuang, the Fire Lotus Cult’s peace faction leader, he is wary of her morally ambiguous nature, yet empathizes with her. He is no cold-hearted schemer.

He lives by the principle “Use the law as a shield and the martial world as a spear.” He reopens old cases while strictly following procedure, and only permits the Shadow Pavilion, founded by his father’s former subordinates, to act against those beyond the law’s reach. Xuan Ying once stopped him from assassinating a member of the maternal relatives’ faction. He forms a mutually restraining alliance with Su Wen of the Hundred Knowledge Hall, a female historian from the previous dynasty who seeks the truth behind the “Twin Calamities” and trades old Shen family records for vital information. Within the Fire Lotus Cult, Su Ningshuang’s peace faction, “Kindling the People,” stands against the war faction, “The Fire Lotus Burns the World.” Her struggle over using a sacred relic to kill corrupt officials weighs heavily on him.

His political maneuvering proceeds step by step. In the salt-tax case, he uses the Hundred Knowledge Hall to spread rumors and stoke public anger, prompting the censors to petition for an investigation. After joining the Supreme Court, he first clears a wrongful conviction in Qingzhou and earns a reputation as a brilliant investigator, then takes advantage of a minister’s appreciation for talent to access the old Shen family records. As struggles at court become entangled with grudges in the martial world, he must uncover the truth about his family and the “Twin Calamities,” balance the law against the martial world, and contend with pressure from all sides. His careful moves are sure to set the dynasty’s fortunes in motion.
