Synopsis

That day, with my eyes closed amid the incense smoke in the scripture hall, I suddenly heard the truth in your chanting.

That month, I turned every prayer wheel, not to deliver souls, but to touch your fingertips.

That year, I prostrated myself along the mountain road, not to seek an audience, but to draw close to your warmth.

That lifetime, I journeyed around mountains, rivers, and pagodas, not to earn a better next life, but to meet you along the way.

This novel is adapted from the lyrics of the folk song “Kangding Love Song”: the ancient city of Kangding, Horse Racing Mountain, drifting clouds, and the crescent moon. A melody travels through history, bearing witness to a romantic little town. This is an unchanging love legend from Tibetan mythology, spanning a thousand years and passed down through generations:

It is said that on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month in the late Eastern Han dynasty, the birthday of Shakyamuni Buddha (Tibetan: ཤཱཀྱ་མུ་ནེ།), he would fly to Horse Racing Mountain every year, where nine dragons sprayed sacred water to bathe him. Yet the twin-colored lotus flowers, born from the same root, turned against each other, and the Buddha decreed that their souls would endure a thousand years of tribulations. Five hundred years later, during the Tang dynasty, as Princess Wencheng journeyed to Tibet to marry, the souls of the twin-colored lotus flowers were reborn. One became Yiruo, a flower in the medicinal garden of the Medicine Buddha; the other became an abandoned baby on the Tea Horse Road, raised by the old serf Gesang Ama. The two met, fell in love, and stayed by each other’s side, sharing their joys and sorrows. Elder Sister Li was the fairy Lhamo of the Buddhist realm, with a chance to cultivate herself into a bodhisattva. But after breaking Buddhist rules, she was imprisoned by the Vajra Dharma King in the Moon Palace’s Pure Ice Pavilion and transformed into a Gesang flower. Brother Zhang became a lama at a monastery and knelt before the Buddha for over a hundred years, praying for the Gesang flower in the heavens…
