In the 26th year of the Republic of China, there was a severe drought. The Henan landlord Shen family went bankrupt. The eldest daughter Shen Qinghe was forced to flee the famine with the long-term worker Li Tiezhu. Along the way, Qinghe loses her squeamishness and learns to dig wild vegetables and identify directions, while Tiezhu protects her with physical strength.
