The author Susan Townley is the wife of Walter Townley, the British Minister in Beijing after the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded China. After the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded China, Cixi, in order to ease relations with Western countries, invited the female family members of ministers from various countries in Beijing to visit the Forbidden City.
