The toad at home was lying on its back, about to die. I was going to take it outside and throw it away, but my husband and father-in-law hurriedly fought over giving it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
In my previous life, after my mother-in-law, who hated small animals, died, my husband and father-in-law asked me to buy a pet. They even said I would be the lady of the house from then on and could keep whatever I wanted.
I bought a dog, thinking it would be lively and cute and bring some joy to the household.
Unexpectedly, it treated me like an enemy. It would either poop in my wardrobe or pee in my handbag.
Even creepier, it wore my mother-in-law’s old pajamas and slept in the same bed as my father-in-law!
I wanted to get rid of the strange dog, but my husband and father-in-law blamed me for being so heartless that I couldn’t even tolerate a dog.
It wasn’t until the hundredth day after my mother-in-law’s death, when my husband took me and the dog to visit her grave, that I realized the truth. Every time I burned a paper offering, the dog burned one too.
After we finished burning the offerings, I suffered a brain hemorrhage and died on the spot. Just before I died, I saw my mother-in-law’s spirit float out of the dog and enter my corpse.
Only then did I understand. My husband and father-in-law had pretended to let me keep a pet so my mother-in-law could possess it and wait for a chance to trade lives with me!
When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day my mother-in-law’s funeral ended, when my husband asked me to choose a pet.
