In a near future where senses can be purchased, rented and deprived, Neumann's sensory replacement technology (SS) has reshaped the entire world. The rich can experience extreme pleasure without taking risks, while the poor are forced to sell their five senses in order to survive, and a new underclass - "sensory surrogates" - emerges.
When a series of bizarre murders occur, and signs at the scene indicate that the murderer is pursuing something far beyond the killing itself, stubborn detective Lane is forced to take over the investigation. The only clue comes from Ella, a talented sculptor who was born blind and "heard" the crime. Under pressure from high-level police and lobbying from technology giants, the court approved a radical and dangerous resolution: forcing a temporary replacement of Ella's extraordinary hearing with Ren's vision.
