During the Republic of China, undercurrents surged in Jinling City. Gu Zhifei, a criminal psychology professor who returned from studying abroad, and Shen Yuqing, the detective director of the Security Command with complex background and ruthless methods, were forced to be tied up because of a series of serial murders marked by the coordinates of the "Gate of Hell" and the handwriting of "Resurrection of the Dead". The investigation pointed to the forbidden area that Shen Yuqing's family strictly guarded and his "long dead" brother Shen Jinglan. The two went from being mutually exclusive and testing to being forced to trust and cooperate, and gradually uncovered a huge conspiracy that spanned more than ten years. The conspiracy involves ancient occult legends, the dark inheritance of the family, the game between the top military and political leaders, and the shadow of the Japanese invasion of China. Gu Zhifei uses reason and science as his blade, while Shen Yuqing uses his experience and iron-blooded skills as a shield. In the foggy Jinling City, they work together to fight against an opponent with extraordinary resourcefulness and deep obsession who seems to have truly returned from hell. In the process, they redefine justice, emotion and self.
