When a virtuous monk from the apocalypse opens his eyes, he finds himself a young novice at Qingming Temple in Ningjin County during the War of Resistance Against Japan. His compassionate senior brother tries to stop him. "The Buddhist path is pure. Do not take a life."
He presses his palms together and sighs. "Until hell is empty, I will not become a Buddha. But now, hell is here on earth."
The next day, the temple bell rings as usual, while a Japanese troop at the foot of the mountain is mysteriously wiped out, each soldier marked with a vermilion dot between the brows.
Years later, as the founding ceremony draws cheers from the crowds, he gazes into the distance, his chest covered in medals, and fingers his prayer beads. "Master, I was wrong back then. The Buddha is not in the Western Paradise. He is within firing range."
