While accompanying my best friend to a jewelry store to sell gold ornaments and scrape together a down payment, she scrolled through a popular post about parents favoring sons over daughters and sighed.
“Girls from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai really have it good. Even the gold bracelets on your wrists are so heavy. But I’m curious: you have a younger brother. Are your parents as biased toward boys as the post says?”
I laughed at her for being brainwashed by the internet’s toxic feel-good advice and retorted, “Come on, you’ve seen all the limited-edition bags and designer accessories in my closet. And besides, I have several property deeds with my name on them.”
My friend realized she’d made a fool of herself. “Right. I’m going to have to work my way up to your level, you rich people.”
As we joked around, the saleswoman interrupted us, looking very embarrassed.
“Excuse me, but your bracelet may be fake.”
