Lin Yanxing's life was completely rewritten by a piece of red paper at 04:44 in the morning.
This piece of paper seeped out of shelf No. 44 In the university library, dragging him into a strange town from which he could not escape. The rules here are simple but cruel: every early morning, you must write your name on a red paper and stick it on the door; if the red paper is blown away by the wind before sunrise, you will "expire" - and be "asked to leave" on the seventh day, with no one to return.
His only guide is a "Modern Chinese Dictionary" that turns pages automatically - with each additional page, a new contradictory rule is added in blood and ink.
He must rely on linguistic knowledge to find loopholes in the rules, but gradually discovers that even his name and memory may be lies written down. The townspeople went through the ritual numbly, and the faceless and wordless people hunted along the ink marks in the dark. All clues point to that paradoxical warning:
"Don't believe anything written on red paper - including this one."

The horror of "Paper Town" is infiltrative. It doesn't have Jump Scare, but it still makes you feel uneasy after closing the book: red paper, ink stains, silent chase... These images will sneak into your dreams. What's even more frightening is that you will begin to wonder if there are undiscovered "rules" hidden in the real world, but we are not aware of them yet.
This is not an easy novel, it requires you to think, it requires you to invest, and it even requires you to occasionally turn back to the previous text to check the rules. But when you keep up with the pace, you will find that you have become an accomplice in "exploiting loopholes in the rules." That sense of intellectual involvement and plot tension are intertwined, a reading experience that few works can provide.
