Wolf Song of the Cangyuan

On the vast grasslands of northwest China, from the 1980s to the early twenty-first century, a she-wolf with a white tuft on the tip of her left ear, known as Xue Er, loses her pack as a pup and struggles to survive through resilience and cunning. She rebuilds her pack three times and suffers the loss of her cubs twice, yet never stops upholding the laws of survival on the grasslands.

Meanwhile, Tengger, a grassland herdsman who once made his living hunting wolves, has his view of them transformed after a life-or-death clash with Xue Er, when he witnesses her intelligence and tenderness. He changes from wolf hunter to guardian of the grassland ecosystem, forming a conservation group and promoting the return of grazing land to grassland to secure a place for wolves to live.

Xue Er and Tengger, wolf and man, face crises together: changes in the grassland ecosystem, attacks by poachers, and devastating wildfires. From initial hostility, they come to help one another and forge a bond of trust that crosses species. Xue Er leads her pack in maintaining the ecological balance of the grasslands, while Tengger uses humanity’s strength to protect both wolves and their home.

As time passes, Xue Er grows old, and Tengger’s hair turns gray. Batu, a new generation of grassland guardian, takes up the torch. At last, Xue Er passes away peacefully, surrounded by her pack. Her spirit and Tengger’s conservation work come together in a song of the wolves of the vast grasslands, bearing witness to the hope and legacy of people and wolves, and humanity and nature, living in harmony.
