Strange Tales of Treasure Hunting: Heavenly Spiritual Treasures

“Bao treasure hunting” is a mysterious cultural phenomenon widely found in Chinese folk legends. It appears most often in street tales, local gazetteers, and folklore anecdotes from northern China, especially North China and the Northeast, as well as some parts of Jiangnan. At its heart are the three acts of “seeking spirits, capturing spirits, and claiming treasure.” According to legend, “treasure hunters” possess special skills that let them identify the “spiritual objects” of the world and use secret methods to “subdue” them, capturing them for their own use. The practice carries the romance of treasure hunting while also reflecting reverence for nature’s spiritual forces and the geomancy of local places, as well as a contest with them. It is a vivid folk imagining of the relationship between people and nature, and of desire and restraint.
