New title: Hong Kong Island 50: From Undertaker’s Son to Hong Kong Tycoon. Period novel. No System + no saintly protagonist + multiple screen properties + feng shui + technology to strengthen the nation
Wang Jiang, a modern-day master surgeon, dies of overwork on the operating table after working 72 hours straight. By a twist of fate, his soul transmigrates to 1950s Hong Kong and takes over the body of a wastrel with the same name. From the start, he faces hellish difficulty: his father has disappeared, leaving behind a funeral shop called Wang’s Funeral Supplies on the verge of bankruptcy and a mountain of debt. Worse, his creditors, the Wo Hop To triad, force him to take over the leadership of their lowest-ranking branch, Thirteen Hall: a hollow title and a mess that could be swallowed up at any moment.
Facing fearsome underworld bosses, he uses feng shui to defuse crises. Facing wealthy tycoons on their deathbeds, he uses a blend of Chinese and Western medicine to bring them back to health. Fists and brains: he recruits followers, takes over territory, and builds a new order. In his hands, feng shui becomes a powerful tool for maneuvering through the world; medicine becomes the perfect way to befriend the powerful and win people over. Using the funeral shop as his foundation, he applies knowledge far beyond his time to build up the branch, recruiting followers, meeting beautiful women, and battling enemies. From the chaotic alleys of Kowloon to the glittering heights of Central, Wang Jiang wields medicine in his left hand and mysticism in his right. Step by step, he transforms a failing branch and pits his wits and strength against Westerners, Japanese invaders, corrupt police from the old regime, Taiwanese agents, comprador tycoons, local gangsters, Southeast Asian criminal forces, and outsiders looking to muscle in. In the end, he becomes the true power broker who stirs up the tides of Hong Kong while keeping his country close to heart.
This can be said to be the best novel I have encountered on Tomato. The content is wonderful, not exaggerated, and has connotation and depth.
The protagonist is very popular, he is capable but not arrogant, he values friendship, and he has a bottom line in doing things. The more I watch it, the more I like it.
It can be called a classic, with endless aftertaste of many bridges. It is a very rich and enjoyable novel that is worth pondering over and over again.
