In 1928 in Peiping, the warlord Marshal Gu Yan invited female teacher Su Xiao to run a school in the military in order to promote a new type of education. Su Xiao was opposed by the old military department because she advocated equality between men and women, but Gu Yan always supported her - helping her build a school building and protecting her from harassment. When other warlords attacked Peiping, Gu Yan was forced to lead the army, and Su Xiao organized women in the rear to rescue the wounded and raise supplies. During the war, Gu Yan returned seriously injured, and the two of them promised in the flames of war: "I will marry you when the world is at peace."
