An Outrageous Bridesmaid Fee? I Called Off the Wedding on the Spot

On our wedding day, the emcee called out, “Exchange rings.” But my fiancé, Gu Zhe, suddenly stopped me and pulled two red envelopes from his pocket. One was as thick as a brick. He grinned and handed it to the bridesmaid, Luo Yuqing. “Yuqing, thanks!” The other was as thin as a sheet of paper. He casually passed it to my younger sister. “We’re family. Just a token.” Luo Yuqing opened hers in front of everyone and shrieked with delight. “Nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine! Brother Zhe, you’re so generous!” My sister clutched the two hundred yuan, her face flushing bright red. I looked at Gu Zhe, but he seemed to think nothing of it. “Yuqing is my best friend. I had to make sure she got the respect she deserves. Your sister is my sister, too. We’re family, no need to stand on ceremony.” “Well said.” I nodded, and under the gaze of all the guests, smiled as I took off my diamond ring and tossed it, veil and all, back into his arms. “You count as family, too. So we won’t be having this wedding. We’re all family here, so we can just go through the motions.”
