A Fifty-Year-Old Man's Dream

Two pictures are taped above Old Chen’s bed in the construction-site shack: one is a crayon drawing by his daughter of “Daddy building a skyscraper,” and the other is a crumpled Interstellar poster. At 4:40 a.m., he gropes his way out of bed and tightens rebar thirty floors up, in a building with no roof yet. The cold wind cuts across his cracked fingers. Just last night, a headlamp was still shining here. Bent over, he had filled the backs of discarded building materials with formulas his coworkers couldn’t understand: about black hole evaporation, about the gravitational constant in eleven-dimensional space.
