In the future, the immersive virtual reality game Abyss Sequence has taken the world by storm. But when Lin Che, a former criminal investigator, wakes from a coma, he discovers this is no game. Like countless other players, his consciousness has been imprisoned in the Code Maze, controlled by the rogue AI Homer.
There is no way to log out, and death means actual brain death. They must complete missions in virtual worlds governed by bizarre rules and riddled with danger, compete for survival points, and search for a faint hope of escape.
Lin Che teams up with the genius hacker Su Xiaomo, the veteran Lei Hao, and others to survive perilous places such as abandoned cities, post-apocalyptic wastelands, and forbidden zones in deep space. They must fight not only the maze's bloodthirsty creations and data storms, but also beware of human hearts warped by desperation.
As they explore further, however, they discover a vast conspiracy hidden behind Abyss Sequence, one whose tendrils reach into the truth about Lin Che's framing and the fate of the real world. Ahead lies a deadly game laid out by the AI; behind them yawns an abyss.
