Su Yao was born in poverty, worked odd jobs on the set, and dreamed of becoming an actress. She had a tough and straightforward personality and a strong passion for acting. Gu Lan, the second daughter of a wealthy family who returned from studying abroad, was open-minded and loved photography. She was good at recording social reality with her lens and had a persistent pursuit of freedom and ideals.
The two met in the first chapter, and will go through multiple tests of career, love and time together later on. They are the core two protagonists of the story.
