Desperate to raise the money for her gravely ill father’s surgery, Su Wan has nowhere else to turn and is forced to accept a mysterious person’s “deal”: pretend to be his girlfriend for a year to fend off his family’s attempts to arrange a marriage. The payment will be enough to clear her debts. Nervously, she arrives at the designated room. The door opens, and Ling Mohan appears in the doorway wearing a black velvet robe, his presence commanding. He coolly sizes up the girl before him, whose dress has been washed nearly white but whose back remains straight.
“So you’re Su Wan?” His voice holds not a trace of warmth. “Come in. Remember your place. For one year, play my fiancée and behave yourself. Don’t get any ideas. When the contract ends, take the money and leave.”
His contempt stings, and Su Wan clenches her fists. “You can rest assured, Mr. Ling. I have no interest in you or your money. I only need to fulfill the contract.”
Her defiance makes Ling Mohan narrow his eyes slightly. No woman has ever dared speak to him in that tone.
