Chen Ping, a poor boy from Yunluo Village, has lived with his mother, who suffers from a chronic cough, since childhood. He makes a living gathering herbs. Though their days are meager, he has an unyielding spirit. By chance, when Zhao Feng, a disciple of the Xuanqing Temple, bullies him over his bamboo basket, the aloof and ethereal Chu Ling'er, a fellow disciple, steps in to help. He is also unexpectedly invited to take part in Xuanqing Temple’s recruitment trial.
Chen Ping had thought cultivation was beyond his reach, but he turns out to have a low-grade wood spiritual root. He enters Xuanqing Temple as an outer disciple. Armed with the "Qi Refining Manual", he sets out to seek immortality as an ordinary mortal. He must not only face the harsh test of being expelled if he fails to reach the first level of Qi Refining within three months, but also find a way to survive in a sect full of talented people despite his mediocre aptitude.
Chu Ling'er has considerable cultivation and a mysterious past. From their first meeting, she notices Chen Ping’s composure and dignity despite his difficult circumstances, and quietly keeps an eye on him. Their fates become intertwined through this chance encounter with the path to immortality. From their first meeting in Yunluo Village to their time together at Xuanqing Temple, they will face the challenges of Qi Refining, Foundation Establishment, Core Formation, Nascent Soul, and many other stages; resist attacks by demonic beasts; and unravel conflicts within the sect. Together, they will write a legend of perseverance, growth, and bonds in the vast world of cultivation.
This is the story of an ordinary boy who defies fate and changes his destiny. It is also a journey along the path to immortality, where the integrity of mortals and the principles of the immortal sect collide and bring out the best in each other.
