In 1926 in the south of the Yangtze River, Shen Zhiwei, a declining lady, and Lin Shutong, a new school teacher, fell in love since childhood. They took the engraved wooden comb as their trust and only called them "best friends" to the outside world. The two were forced into marriage by their families one after another. Shen was arranged to have a blind date with Lin's brother Yanzhi, while Lin Shutong was betrothed to a wealthy northern businessman. During the struggle, Lin Shutong was kidnapped for refusing to marry. Shen Zhiwei went to danger alone and died trying to save his lover. Before his death, he left behind a wooden comb and the last words "live a good life". Lin Shutong was so distraught that she died with a wooden comb at the place where Shen Zhiwei died a few months later. The elders of the two families considered them "unchaste and unfilial" and buried them in separate graves in the wilderness, where they would remain separated forever.
