"Beacon Smoke at Meiling" is based on the battles in the Hunan, Guangdong and Jiangxi border areas during the Anti-Japanese War in January 1945. It focuses on the experience of Lin Zhengming, the temporary platoon leader of the 2nd Division of the 7th Theater, and the soldiers stationed at Dayuling in southern Jiangxi.
Facing the fierce attack of the Japanese 104th Division, Yizhang and Jiufeng fell one after another. Lin Zhengming led the team to hold on to Meiling, the key point on the northbound Guangdong-Hankou Railway and the gateway to southern Jiangxi. The battle lasted from early morning to dusk, with corpses strewn across the battlefield and ammunition running low. Lin Zhengming was injured in his left arm but still commanded the battle, and was eventually ordered to withdraw to the second line of defense.
During the retreat, the growth of recruit Awu, support from fellow villagers, concern for his family, and determination to regain lost territory were intertwined, showing the Chinese soldiers' will to fight despite their temporary retreat in the arduous war environment.
