Destroying My Exclusive Death-Exemption Token: Husband, Your Time Is Up

Seven years into our marriage, whenever my husband made me angry, he would take a note from the safe that said, “Please forgive me.”

“Sign it, okay? You have to forgive me.”

I silently took the note and put it in the cabinet, just like before.

Seeing the cabinet almost full of notes, I couldn't help reminding him, “Use them sparingly. There are hardly any left.”

He waved a hand and kept playing his game. “How could that be? I've only used a few. You're worrying too much, honey.”

As soon as he finished speaking, he kicked over a glass, shattering it across the floor.

He took another note from the safe. “Please forgive me.”

I took it.

There were three left. Once he used them all, it would be the end of him.
