"Yongle Dadian" is the largest comprehensive book in my country. Because it was compiled during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty ordered ministers Xie Jin, Yao Guangxiao and others to organize 3,000 civil servants and Confucian scholars, and it took five years to compile it, so it was named "Yongle Dadian".
"Yongle Dadian" compiles more than 8,000 kinds of books from the pre-Qin Dynasty to the early Ming Dynasty, including works on classics, history, zi, ji, drama, geography, medical divination, agricultural and industrial technology, Taoism, Buddhism and other aspects.
"Yongle Dadian" has a total of 22,937 volumes, including 60 volumes of general catalogue, packed into 11,095 volumes, with about 370 million words.
Its large length, extensive collection, neat writing, and exquisite decoration were rare treasures in the world at that time. Unfortunately, there was no engraving and printing of the book after it was completed.
"Yongle Dadian" is compiled according to rhymes. When it is compiled into ancient books, no deletions or alterations are allowed. It must be copied word for word from the original book. Therefore, the original appearance of ancient books is preserved, allowing many lost secret documents from before the Song and Yuan Dynasties to be preserved and circulated.
"Yongle Dadian" has an original Yongle copy and a Jiajing copy, both of which are replicas. The original is hidden in Wenyuan Pavilion, the copy is kept in the Emperor's Palace in Beijing, and the original is hidden in Nanjing. Both the original and the copy were destroyed when the Ming Dynasty fell.
The only remaining original copy was burned and looted when the British, French and Eight-Power Allied forces entered Beijing twice. Most of them were destroyed and some were scattered abroad. So far, there are only more than 300 volumes at home and abroad, and about 200 volumes in China.
