Beneath the old locust tree at the end of the alley, Moyan, Bai Ze, and Duan Jiaxu become friends over a cloth doll and form an inseparable “trio.” From a time capsule of unspoken understanding buried in their childhood as playmates, through the tender stirrings and choices of adolescence, to falling in love at university, finding their footing at work, and entering married life, the three walk side by side for more than twenty years. The years pass, but the warm sunlight at the end of the alley remains, and the old locust tree bears witness to their friendship and love as they grow from youthful innocence into maturity. At last, amid everyday chores and tender care, they find a happy home together.
