Excerpt:

Han Yimo slowed as he passed the plane tree. The bench was empty, but he thought he could see the girl who had been slandered, her head bowed as she read. A green ginkgo leaf was tucked between the pages.

Qiao Jiajin met Jiu Zai at their usual spot. The boy had an unlit cigarette between his lips and patted his shoulder, as if saying, “I’ve made peace with what happened to Rong Ye. From now on, let’s stay out of trouble and open a little noodle shop. What do you say?”

…

But Qi Xia still hadn’t come back.

It had been half a month.

Chen Junnan squatted on the steps, his hair a complete mess from running his hands through it.

“Does that thing Xiao Chu gave us even work?”

He thought back to that last day, to the way he’d yelled at Qi Xia.

So many people hated him back then, and what he’d said hadn’t exactly been kind.

Could Qi Xia have gone into hiding because Chen Junnan had yelled at him?

The more Chen Junnan thought about it, the more likely it seemed. Qi Xia might look cold and arrogant, like he was a big deal, but in truth he cared about what other people thought more than anyone.

“Hey, Jun Nan, stop scaring yourself. Maybe the road’s just too long, and he needs time to walk back?”

Chen Junnan froze, then laughed.

“Old Qiao, that’s ridiculous!”

Still laughing, he turned to look toward the mouth of the alley.

A gray sky, a long alley, and nothing else.

He turned back and lowered his eyes to the ground.

“Fine,” he said. “Then we’ll wait a little longer.”
