The story begins in the Gujia morgue, which is damp, full of formalin and putrid smell. Gu Changsheng (the protagonist) expressionlessly sews up the corpse of a guard who was executed for violating family rules. He was already used to the whispers and disdainful looks from the people around him. Three years of living as a useless person had smoothed away all his edges and corners, leaving only a cold glint deep in his eyes.
