Chen Qingzhi (484-539), courtesy name Ziyun, was a famous Liang general in the Southern Dynasties. Born into a poor family, he served as an attendant to Emperor Wu of Liang, Xiao Yan, and was promoted to the throne because of his courage and resourcefulness. His career as a leader led to many miracles: in the Battle of Guoyang, he defeated a large number with a small number, and in the Northern Expedition of Luoyang, he led 7,000 white-robed troops to conquer thirty-two cities, shocking the Northern Wei Dynasty. He used his troops like a god, and his soldiers were loyal to death. It is said among the people that "famous teachers and generals should not be imprisoned, and thousands of troops and horses should avoid white robes." However, the lonely army was defeated in the end. He died of illness at the age of fifty-six, and his posthumous name was "Wu". His legendary life demonstrated the style of a Confucian general and his spirit of loyalty and bravery, and wrote a brilliant chapter in the military history of the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
