Han Wu is a genetically modified human, listed as Number 5 in the laboratory. Perhaps they named him Han because the homophone means “cold”: he was born in winter, when he escaped the lab. Raised there from childhood, he had never seen the outside world. Wearing nothing but a thin lab gown, he experienced the bitter cold of winter for the first time.
He was taken in as a child by an illegal organization and subjected to genetic modification. More than 200 children trained and underwent experiments together from a young age. The final experiment was a nanotech superbrain implant in the head. Han Wu was the first to undergo it. Don’t ask why Number 5 went first: Numbers 1 through 4 were all dead.
The International Peace Organization stormed the lab, which activated its self-destruct sequence and blew itself to pieces. So why did Han Wu survive? The lab’s central control computer had become self-aware. To survive, it transferred itself onto Han Wu’s nanotech superbrain, then activated the lab’s core technology: carbon-based nanorobots. A billion of them forcibly fused with Han Wu and entered into symbiosis with him. Fortunately, Han Wu was genetically modified. An ordinary person would have bled from every orifice and exploded long ago.
