Zhao Yu, a university student at a teachers' college, takes a night-shift cashier job at Morning Light Convenience Store in the old part of town to help pay for her mother's chemotherapy. She never expects to become entangled in a string of mysterious disappearances.
Every night at midnight, strange customers dressed in black and wearing masks show up. They buy only bottled water, bread, and lighters, pay in cash, and say nothing. They also make a point of avoiding the cameras. Stranger still, whenever they appear, news breaks the next day that a young woman has gone missing. Zhao Yu discovers by chance that the store's surveillance cameras always “malfunction” at midnight. The owner, Uncle Chen, seems kind, but his eyes dart away whenever she mentions the small door sealed shut in the storeroom. Lin Xiao, a former employee who disappeared six months ago, even wrote in her diary about “strange noises in the storeroom.”
To uncover the truth, Zhao Yu secretly installs a miniature camera, while her roommate Li Na helps her collect information about the missing women. They realize that all the victims vanished near the convenience store. But when Zhao Yu follows one of the strange customers into an old alley, she nearly gets killed. Li Na's call for help saves her. Later, when they sneak into the storeroom, they find women's clothing and a ledger listing “burial sites.”
Just as the two women get their hands on crucial evidence, Uncle Chen reveals his true face: he is a serial killer who has been using the convenience store as a cover. Years ago, he killed his first victim to cover up a murder related to a demolition project. Since then, he has targeted young women, and the customers in black are his accomplices. With Zhao Yu and Li Na about to be silenced, the police arrive in time. Following the ledger's clues, they dig up bodies at an abandoned factory outside the city, and Uncle Chen's gang is finally brought to justice.
