Fuji

The story begins in 1980, in Jiangyan Village, Denong County, Jichun Province, in Northeast China. The Fu family fishes and runs a tofu workshop. From a tiny shop where the stone mill creaks, to a modern factory roaring with machinery; from the fields of Jiangyan Village, to the vast reclamation farms of Sanjiang, and then to the bustling markets and high-stakes business negotiations in the south. The heroine, Bai Hui, transforms from a humble countrywoman selling goods from a basket into a business leader steering a corporate group through the storms of her era… Bai Hui and her family press on, stumbling along the way, with the tenacity, hard work, and integrity instilled by the black soil. This is the story of one family’s struggle, and a glimpse into the dramatic ups and downs of China’s rural economy. There is the roar of machinery and the sound of children studying; the rich aroma of tofu and the cold edge of capital; the resolve to stay rooted in the land and the longing to reach the world. It tells how three generations of the Fu family use their wisdom, sweat, and even tears to turn a simple fragrance of soybeans into a family business worth protecting, while seeking enduring answers amid the tides of a changing era. Fu Ji is a family epic steeped in the warmth of everyday life and the spirit of its times, a tribute to all the ordinary people who work hard on the land and dare to make a difference.
