The Artificer tells the story of Mo Huan, a craftsman apprentice in the border army. Trapped in a desperate situation amid a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood, his blood accidentally awakens an ancient metal fragment. In his confusion, he draws upon the battlefield's "laws of metal and iron." Though he briefly drives back the enemy, he suffers a terrifying backlash from "Heaven's Jealousy." On the brink of death, he is rescued by Ou Ye, a mysterious old craftsman living in a scrap yard. From then on, he enters a world of the "Heavenly Craft Path," where power comes from "commanding the underlying laws of all things."
Concealing his edge among the scrap, Mo Huan begins to glimpse the mysteries of "shaping creation" under Ou Ye's rigorous, even cruel, training: using a craftsman's ingenuity to adjust, repair, and even reshape the "laws" of all things. From "joining," to "infusing energy," to "layering patterns" and "harmonizing with the Way," every advance in his craft comes with increasingly cunning and perilous punishments from "Heaven's Jealousy." These range from the wear and destruction of materials and tools, to bizarre hunts by skinning cultists under the watch of "external evils," and then to the deadly, seemingly sentient targeting of the "Heaven's Jealousy mutation." Meanwhile, the Heavenly Craft Bureau's extensive investigation and the Zhenyuan Army's ruthless encirclement close in like a net.
Ou Ye gives his life to protect the Way amid the ruins of thunder and fire, passing on the torch as his own burns out. Alone, Mo Huan inherits the thousand-jin "Qianjun" hammer and the "Keepers' Order." Carrying records of startling secrets, he becomes the last hope of an ancient legacy. Following faint clues, he discovers his predecessor's hidden cache deep in the mountains and learns of the cataclysm and tangled mysteries of his origins connected to the fragment of the "Myriad Phenomena Pivot" he bears.
