Wang Shizhu, a farmer from Zhili, during the turmoil of the Qing Dynasty from prosperity to decline (from the Jiaqing to Daoguang years), he was a forcibly recruited Green Camp soldier, experienced the suppression of the White Lotus Sect, and fought against the British invaders. Struggling to grow up amid the collision of old and new weapons, and the awakening of the consciousness of family and country, he eventually transformed from a "soldier to survive" to a veteran "fighting to defend his territory", reflecting the confusion and perseverance of the lower-class soldiers in the late Qing Dynasty amid the drastic changes of the times.
