The male protagonist Chen Wang (originally known as Gou Sheng) was born as the son of a low-income tenant farmer. During the land reform between the Kangxi and Yongzheng years of the Qing Dynasty, he relied on tenacity, wisdom and the opportunities of the times to go from struggling to survive to mastering the right to speak in the land, and finally became a "new farmer" with both farming wisdom and local sentiments. It reflects the Qing Dynasty's people's livelihood, land system and grassroots survival wisdom.
