The male protagonist Tiedan (later renamed "Meng He"), during the ethnic hierarchy and land changes in the Yuan Dynasty (from Kublai Khan to the first year to the middle of the Yuan Dynasty), grew up as the son of a refugee who lost his land. With his persistence in the land and cross-ethnic survival wisdom, he re-established his roots in the countryside of North China where Mongolians and Han people lived together, and finally became a "new farmer" who connected farming civilization and grassland culture, showing the struggle and growth of the people at the bottom in the cracks of the times.
