When Ling Ye wakes up, he finds himself in a strange hospital that has been abandoned for years. The stench of disinfectant mixed with rotting flesh fills the air, and incomprehensible stains are carved into the yellowed walls. He soon discovers he's not alone: Xiong Lei, a gym trainer; Bai Wei, a medium and writer; and Zhao Zile, a tech geek, are trapped with him in this maze steeped in death.
They're forced to follow the Rules for Inpatients: keep quiet, complete your “treatment tasks” on time, and keep your eyes shut during nighttime rounds, or face pursuit by the “doctor” and the “Red-Shoe Nurse.”
Ling Ye's hyperthymesia allows him to remember every detail, but he discovers a grotesque shadow that doesn't belong to any human lurking in the X-ray of his chest. His medical records show that the hospital knew he was coming all along.
And the so-called “treatment” is actually the beginning of an even deeper horror…
As his teammates begin to mutate one after another, and the hospital reaches out its tendrils to connect with the sealed nightmares of his childhood, Ling Ye finally realizes the truth: the hospital itself is a living dimensional monster that feeds on fear.
