The Tang Dynasty’s Top Scholar

After being reborn in the womb, Lin Mo became a farm boy during the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty, so poor he couldn’t even get enough to eat. His family could barely scrape together a meal. Going to school? Forget about it! But who could blame him for having modern knowledge in his head?

“They say books hold houses of gold? No, books hold the secrets to getting rich!”

With his advanced ideas, he improved farm tools and farming methods, making sure his family had enough to eat and wear. At the academy, he declared, “Confucius said, ‘Isn’t it a pleasure to study and practice what you have learned?’ But he never said, ‘Study until you’ve memorized everything by rote.’” The old teacher was so furious his whiskers stuck up, but his classmates hailed Lin Mo as a “genius oddball.” At the imperial examination, he quoted the classics while slipping in modern logic. One policy essay left the examiners slapping the table in admiration.
