The Brocade Years Return: A Record of Good Deeds

Lin Zhao, a modern restorer of ancient books, dies in a car accident and is reborn as Su Zhao, the legitimate daughter of the Marquis of Yongchang in the Great Jing dynasty. She wakes with a bone-deep chill and learns that in her previous life she was framed by her half-sister, Su Wan, and drowned. Even her reputation after death was smeared, with people claiming she had been involved with another man.

In this life, she returns with an embroidery needle in hand as her blade and kindness as her shield. At a birthday banquet, she uses an embroidered screen of pines and cranes to foil a wicked scheme. Taking charge of the household, she brings relief to tenant farmers with humane reforms. And as fate turns full circle, she and the reserved scholar Zhou Yan move from cautious testing to understanding, using a twin lotus to continue the redemptive love left unfinished in their previous life.

When her half-sister joins forces with foreign enemies to trigger a major salt and iron scandal, she reaches out to save the very foe who wronged her. When turmoil sweeps the court, she sows seeds of kindness through soup kitchens and schools for girls. From the depths of the household to the lives of all under heaven, Confucian benevolence, Buddhist compassion, and Daoist naturalness all become warm lamplight in her hands.

In the end, she and Zhou Ting, who resigns from office and retires from public life, raise twins, “Huai Jin and Wo Yu,” and turn the marquis’s estate into a place where good deeds are passed down. It turns out that rebirth is not for revenge, but for weaving a beautiful life with countless acts of kindness.

“In this life, I will seek no empty fame, fall into no hatred, and simply nurture a heart that strives for goodness.”

A healing tale of growth in a classical setting, where “kind thoughts change fate, and good deeds warm the world,” quietly unfolds.
