In Shen Wang's eyes, his sister-in-law was a materialistic woman. His older brother was in poor health, so she had married into the family to bring him good fortune, and she had demanded a hefty bride price.
Shen Wang was a soldier and didn't know the whole story. All he knew was that his older brother had paid a fortune to bring home a wife, only to die before they could even register their marriage. And yet this sister-in-law had somehow charmed his parents and, quite naturally, stayed with the family.
"A materialistic woman like you brings nothing but bad luck to the man who marries you!"
His sister-in-law's eyes filled with tears of anger. "I'm not just materialistic, I'm wicked, too. Once I have money, I'll lock up the person I like and keep him as a dog. And as for you, Uncle, you're not even good enough to be my dog!"
His sister-in-law moved out and threw herself into building a career. But she never expected her uncle to have people carry one luxurious piece of furniture after another into her little courtyard. She stood there, stunned, until her uncle walked in wearing his military uniform and handed her a bankbook.
"Now that you have money, can you lock me up?"
