The Shadow of the Ishii Unit

The Shadow of Unit Ishii is set in the "Special Military Zone" of Harbin's Pingfang District in 1936, exposing Unit 731's crimes against humanity, including its use of the term "maruta" to refer to live human test subjects. Farmer Wang Laoshi is abducted and used as material for bacterial experiments while passing through a Japanese-controlled area as he tries to save his gravely ill son. His wife, Lin Xiu, enters the forbidden zone in search of him and witnesses atrocities including vivisections without anesthesia and human plague experiments. The details are drawn from postwar records and survivor testimony. Amid the shadows of bodies buried in the snow and records burned to ashes, two ordinary people are forced to become witnesses to the truth of history and to fight back.
