Lin Zhi, a modern-day office worker, never imagined that his life would end in a car accident. He certainly never expected that after dying, instead of getting a sip of Granny Meng's soup, he'd land the job of CEO of a bankrupt underworld: the Yin Emperor.
The underworld he's inherited is a disaster on a cosmic scale. The Eighteen Levels of Hell have collapsed until only their foundations remain, the Wheel of Reincarnation is shattered into pieces, the Book of Life and Death has vanished without a trace, and only three battered underworld gods are left: White Impermanence, whose long johns have a hole in them; Black Impermanence, whose chains are rusted to bits; and the rookie underworld soldier Xiao Hei, whose cleaver keeps getting stuck in walls.
Fortunately, the Heavenly Dao shows some mercy and gives him the Yin Emperor System as a starter pack. It can issue missions, unlock facilities, appoint underworld gods, and convert resources. It can even help modernize the underworld: upgrading bone blades to rune assault rifles, replacing ghost horses with phantom motorcycles that spray ghostfire, giving White Impermanence's mourning staff energy beams, and turning Ox-Head and Horse-Face's pitchforks into powered chainsaws. The motto is “technology on the outside, divine power within,” so cool even evil spirits want to switch sides.
But rebuilding the underworld is harder than revising a client's plans. Ghosts and monsters run rampant in the mortal realm, with evil spirits claiming mountains as their own. Some cultivators treat the underworld as competition for monsters and attack on sight.
Lin Zhi says, “No problem. We'll take the professional approach. I'll stay at headquarters, appoint underworld gods, and use modern equipment to crush those old-fashioned, sinister creatures.”
But can someone tell him why, just after he dealt with a red-clad evil spirit, a thousand-year-old corpse demon showed up? Why, right after he dismantled a soul-guiding formation, the Lord of the Yin Tide appeared? And that invitation to the Southern Heavenly Gate that suddenly arrived from the celestial realm: is it a friendly welcome or a trap?
