The Thousand Character Classic: Worth Its Weight in Gold

The Thousand Character Classic is one of the three pillars of traditional Chinese primer texts, alongside the Three Character Classic and the Hundred Family Surnames. Together, they form the foundation of traditional introductory education. What makes it unique, however, is that it is not merely a literacy primer, but also a miniature encyclopedia of Chinese civilization, a cultural code woven from one thousand distinct Chinese characters. It is no exaggeration to say that every character carries immense weight and value. Only after reading it can one appreciate the vast depth of Chinese culture and writing.
