Zhang Sheng, a native of Hanoi, gathered more than 10,000 people in the late Eastern Han Dynasty but had no one to belong to. In the 10th year of Jian'an (205), the governor of Bingzhou, Gaogan, rebelled against Cao Cao. Zhang Sheng led the bandits between Wei and Mian to Nantong Liu Biao. Zhang Yan, a native of Hongnong, and Wei Gu, a native of Hedong, also raised troops to rebel in response to Gao Gan and Zhang Sheng. Zhang Sheng, Gao Gan and Wei Gu jointly attacked Du Ji but were unable to defeat it. They also raided various counties and gained nothing. Zhong Yao led the Kansai generals Ma Teng and others to conquer Zhang Sheng's army and killed Zhang Yan and Wei Gu. Qing Dynasty scholar He Zhuo suspected that Zhang Baiqi and Zhang Sheng were the same person.
