In the final years of the Great Ravine, glaciers gnawed Earth into a solid block of ice.

Ling made his living as a guide who read the cracks in the ice, but he could see more clearly than anyone: the starship wreckage frozen beneath the ice, the paths of light creeping through the icy fog, even the shadow the Trisolaran fleet cast across the ice.

People called him the Frozen Cult Leader, saying his eyes could see into the divine realm.

Only Ling knew that every time he saw clearly, his retinas bled.

It wasn't a divine revelation. It was a notice of frozen torture, nailed to Earth's forehead by the Trisolarans.

"The spatial freeze zone is expanding." He crushed a rock-hard piece of bread, ice chips digging into his palm. "Either learn to find light in the ice, or wait to be frozen into a filthy chunk of ice in the universe."

Later, he went blind.

Yet he felt the traces of light on the ice: the last ticket to the stars he had sent out with his own hands, for humanity.
