The Marbles Beneath the Eaves, The Evening Breeze Knows My Heart follows three generations through the warmth of a traditional craft: heritage marbles. As children, Gu Xing and An Li bond over marbles beneath an old locust tree. Years later, they reunite and work together to preserve the craft, turning marbles from childhood toys into vessels for passing on culture. After their daughter An Bao is born, they use marbles to chronicle family life and take her across the country to learn, weaving this heritage into her childhood. When An Bao starts kindergarten, she and Lin Yu become childhood friends through their shared love of marbles. Together, they help their classmates and put on an exhibition, passing warmth and tradition on to their peers.
The book has no dramatic conflicts. Instead, through the changing seasons of the old locust tree and the patterns and stories held within the marbles, it delicately portrays steadfast love, devoted family ties, pure friendship, and the living transmission of intangible cultural heritage through everyday life. This heritage is not a cold, lifeless craft. It is the affection tucked inside a marble, the care traced in its patterns, and a tender story slowly written by generation after generation with love and time: The Marbles Beneath the Eaves, The Evening Breeze Knows My Heart.
