As the Sichuan Army marched out of Sichuan to fight the Japanese, a father wrote a flag bearing the word “Death.” On it he wrote: “I do not wish for you to show filial devotion by my side. I only wish for you to serve your nation faithfully. With the nation in peril and the Japanese invaders fierce, every citizen has a part to play in the country’s fate. I wished to serve, but I am past the age. Fortunately, I have a son who has volunteered. I give you this flag to carry with you always. Wipe your blood with it when wounded, and let it wrap your body in death. Press bravely forward, and never forget your duty.”
