No one knew what sort of family this blue-eyed, golden-haired boy came from. People only knew that Mortlake was a surname kissed by death, passed down through a single heir in each generation. The family was harder to find than the ghosts in an ancient castle, and even their breathing seemed borrowed from time.
He eventually found himself beneath Ravenclaw’s star-blue banner, yet spent most of his time among the steaming cauldrons of Potions Class or sitting up late with the crystal ball in Divination. The Mandrake juice bubbling in the cauldron reflected in his eyes. In the hazy images drifting through the crystal ball, a figure gradually began to appear.
When Tom Riddle found him, he wore just the right amount of curiosity. His fingertip traced the family crest set at the corner of the desk. “I’ve heard the Mortlake family keeps some... unusual things.”
The Mortlake family’s secrets sank beneath the water, wrapped in the shadow of death. Above the surface, two boys with secrets of their own let their friendship grow ever more intense. But neither could say whether this warmth that crossed the line would drive away the chill of death, or draw them both into a deeper darkness.
