The last thing Kui Daye remembered was the out-of-control crane on the construction site.
The midday sun was strong, and he squatted beside the newly poured platform to check the spacing between steel bars. Sweat dripped down the straps of his helmet and formed dark circles on the knees of his overalls. The supervisor on the intercom was urging progress again. He smacked his lips and was about to reply when suddenly there was a harsh sound of metal twisting behind him - the legs of the crane lifting the prefabricated panels had somehow sunk into the unconsolidated foundation, and the boom slammed down like a dying python.
He only had time to roll half a circle to the side. From the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of the steel strands on the prefabricated board flashing coldly in the sun.
